Audubon Chicago Region

With 200,000 acres of conservation land, the Chicago metropolitan area encompasses many of the finest and largest tracts of native tallgrass prairie, oak savanna, woodland and wetland left in the Midwest.

Audubon Chicago Region saves wildlife and habitat, and to keep it safe permanently we are hard at work creating a local culture of conservation. Though a small staff is ready to step in where necessary, most of Audubon's work is done by hundreds of volunteers. They include citizen scientists, land stewards, advocates, and more. Everyone is invited to help out.

The HABITAT PROJECT
How you can help:
  • People Who Count. A network of more than 700 citizen-science monitors, often working in cooperation with forest preserve or village officials, to monitor the health of local preserves. Monitor birds, plants, butterflies, and frogs. Learn about results of monitoring studies, which guide conservation and planning efforts throughout the region.
  • Audubon partners with public agencies to restore large complexes of prairie, shrubland and woodland. Our goals are to restore high quality plant communities with thriving wildlife populations and to support active volunteer groups for the sites. For sample projects with web sites, check out Orland Grassland and Bartel Grassland.
  • Our Important Bird Areas program has added 48 Illinois sites to this global network of critical habitats. More nominations are sought.

Lights Out Chicago! A successful campaign to dim lights on all Chicago's skyscraper to protect migrating birds. Learn how you can start a program in your city.

The "Chicago Wilderness" coalition is an inspired coming together of the agencies and people of the region - to save the region's biodiversity by making protected nature a part of the culture. By bringing together science, neighbors, and advocates, Audubon has been a leading member of many key Chicago Wilderness initiatives. We also host the offices and staff of Chicago Wilderness magazine.

Audubon Chicago Region collaborates with National Audubon Society Chapters in the Chicago region.
